The US Navy has a ship that's been in service for over 200 years!

It’s called the USS Constitution and is the oldest active ship in the U.S. Navy-it's been in service for over 200 years! Edmund Hartt's Shipyard was commissioned to build a wooden hull ship in 1794. It cost $302,718 to build and was finished in 1797. It made maiden voyage in 1798 when President George Washington named the ship in honor of the U.S. Constitution
The ship is a three-masted heavy frigate and was one of 6 originally constructed after authorization through the Naval Act of 1794. She was the third frigate built out of six at the time. Joshua Humphries designed the 6 frigates and they were to be the Navy's capital ships, therefore they were built larger and more heavily armed than normal frigates.
The USS Constitution is most famous for her actions during the War of 1812. She captured numerous merchant ships and defeated 5 British warships. Nowadays, the ship maintains a crew of 60 sailors. They attend ceremonies and educational programs in support of the ship’s mission: to educate about the Navy’s role in the war and peace process
